Charles & Ray Eames, Herman Miller, Blue La Fonda Chair, New York, 60s

This design was created in the early 1960s as part of the legendary project for the New York restaurant La Fonda del Sol, realised by the Eames Office in collaboration with Herman Miller. The task: to create a chair that would meet the requirements of a lively dining area while also bearing the characteristic design signature of Charles and Ray Eames – functional, elegant and unmistakably modern.

The fibreglass seat shell features the Eameses' signature precisely defined form with gently modelled curves that combine ergonomic comfort and sculptural clarity. It is upholstered in the original 1960s hopsack fabric, whose textured surface and warm colour scheme preserve its authentic vintage character.

Particularly striking is the so-called ‘La Fonda Base’, a rare and beautifully shaped aluminium base that was developed specifically for this project. The example shown here features the original base, which was later sprayed in a bright red colour – a colour accent that emphasises the graphic quality of the design and gives the piece an individual touch.

The entire piece of furniture has been thoroughly cleaned and carefully preserved. It is in excellent condition, with a wonderfully preserved patina that underlines the historical value of this classic.

The La Fonda model is now considered an icon of mid-century design – a piece of design history that combines innovation, experimentation with materials and the unmistakable lightness of touch of the Eameses.
