This object is a traditional African wooden sculpture that can be attributed to the distinctive, geometrically abstract formal vocabulary of the Dogon or the closely related historical Tellem style from Mali. The slender design, reduced to its essentials with stylized proportions and clearly defined contours, is characteristic of this significant West African sculptural tradition. Such figures often served cultic or ritual purposes and were closely associated with ancestor worship, fertility beliefs, or spiritual ceremonies. Carved from wood, this statuette impresses with its expressive presence and embodies the timeless aesthetic of African art, whose minimalist formal language has also had a lasting influence on European modernism.
