For generations, the African textile Bogolan has been intricately hand-woven by Malian men and dyed with mud by women. The motifs depicted often have great cultural significance and refer to historical events, mythological themes or proverbs. Traditionally, the ceremonial cloth is worn at important moments in life, as it is believed that the cloth absorbs dangerous forces that are released in such moments.
