Rare “Japan” sofa designed in 1953 by the legendary Danish designer and architect Finn Juhl for the renowned manufacturer France & Son.
Finn Juhl is considered one of the most important figures of Scandinavian Modernism and played a major role in introducing Danish design to an international audience. His furniture is celebrated for its organic forms, sculptural elegance, and remarkable sense of lightness. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Juhl approached furniture as artistic compositions rather than purely functional objects, creating pieces that remain timeless and highly influential today.
The “Japan” series was conceived following Juhl’s travels to Japan and clearly reflects his admiration for traditional Japanese craftsmanship and aesthetics. The collection is distinguished by its refined joinery, clean lines, and harmonious balance between minimalism and warmth. Today, the Japan series is regarded as one of Finn Juhl’s most iconic and sought-after designs from the 1950s.
The Japan chairs and sofas are currently reissued by Onecollection and produced in Japan. However, the original version featuring a solid teak wood frame is no longer in production, making these early editions particularly desirable among collectors and design enthusiasts.
This rare example features its original brown fabric upholstery, a solid teak wood frame, and elegant brass details. An exceptional collector’s piece with timeless elegance and significant design historical importance.
