Traditional headpiece used in Chi Wara ceremonies of the Bamana (Bambara) people of Mali, made in the 1930s. Chi Wara figures are important ritual objects used in agricultural initiation and harvest ceremonies, symbolising Chi Wara, the mythical culture hero who taught humans the art of farming. The sculptural form, with its abstracted animal motifs, combines powerful symbolism with skilled woodcarving craftsmanship. The natural ageing of the wood, along with visible traces of use, enhances the authenticity and historical depth of the object. In good vintage condition.
