This headrest from the Bashada tribe of Ethiopia dates from the 40s and was traditionally carved from a single solid block of wood. Objects such as this served as personal headrests and were an important part of everyday life within the nomadic cultures of southern Ethiopia. Its sculptural simplicity and organic form make this headrest a remarkable example of functional design beyond the Western design tradition. The natural wear and rich patina enhance its authentic character and bear witness to decades of use. In good vintage condition.
